Terms are important. In this section we will discuss some meanings of the terms "niche" and "distribution area"
This is a representation of a 3-dimensional "niche" of Sciurus carolinensis. The dimensions are the minum and maximum temperature, in centigrades times 10, and the annual precipitation in mm. It is a map of distribution of S. carolinensis but in an abstract 3-d multivariate space, or "niche space."
